Observation and Judgment when Weaning Foals

Do not substitute someone else's judgment for your own. Horsing Around, LLC is not responsible for your observation and judgment.

The animal owner and caregiver are responsible for making wise decisions about timing and proper preparation for beginning weaning foals. Only they can make personal observations of their animals and facility.

Animals need to be checked frequently while wearing the EZEE WEAN halter and strap. Be sure the halter fits correctly on the foal.

Applying the EZEE WEAN Halter & Strap

Safe Environment for Weaning Foals

Your judgment is needed to determine if your facility is safe for your animals. The environment should be free of any obstacles a haltered animal could get caught on. The confined area, should be free of trees, metal debris, wire, feeders (any sharp edges), and any object your animals could rub on and hook or catch a halter.

Animals that are being contained with electric fencing need to have been conditioned to its effects weeks before starting the weaning process. All fencing must be functioning as it was meant to and in proper repair.

Appropriate Age to Wean Foals

Your judgment is needed to determine if your foals are healthy and age appropriate to begin the weaning process.

Factors to Consider Prior to Beginning Weaning Your Foal

Length of Weaning Process

The caregiver is to understand each animal has his or her own tolerance level of comfort and discomfort. The EZEE WEAN halter and strap is annoying and causes discomfort for both foal and mother. Also, not every foal will stop nursing, cold turkey. Do not be alarmed. Most cases the foal will reduce the number of times he will attempt to nurse. The mother's bag will gorge, at first, then over a period of two weeks you should observe the bag reducing in size. The total weaning process typically takes four to six weeks. Do not remove the product to soon. Again, you must rely on your observation and good judgment.
