I've always been told not to leave a halter on an animal, especially when the animal is left unattended. Why would I consider doing this now?

Ezee Wean allows grazing to
continue as usual. Ezee Wean
does not interfere with drinking
from open stock tank.

Note: When feeding grain and
other types of supplements, we
recommend feeding in a large
open rubber feed pan at ground
level. Never substitute someone
else’s judgment for your own.
There are no two animals a like
nor two situations the same.

Attention: Your fences need to
be installed and function
according to the manufactures
recommendations, especially
electric fencing. Whenever
electric fencing is being used,
your foal needs to learn to
respect it by keeping its head inside the boundaries of the wire,
prior to applying Ezee Wean.

Typically, it is not a good idea to leave a halter on an animal, but there are benefits for taking this step. The past method of weaning foals was not without its own risks. Separation anxiety can be the cause of self-inflicted injuries resulting in unsightly blemishes or loss of life. I believe weaning foals by the old separation method is very unnatural and far more risky compared with our new method and using our EZEE WEAN halter and strap.

The EZEE WEAN halter and strap has a breakaway leather pole strap help prevent the halter from getting hung-up on elements in their environment. Even with this feature, you should keep the environment clear of obstacles that the halter could possibly get caught on.

Keeping the animals together in a safe and controlled environment is less risky. When the animal caregiver is frequently monitoring the well-being of the animals (as recommended by Horsing Around, LLC), the process is even less risky compared to weaning by separation.

Weaning foals using the EZEE WEAN method, you will eliminate:

  • heart wrenching whinnying
  • fence line and stall pacing
  • injuries caused by animals trying to reunite
  • foal gravitating to another lactating mother
  • the need of a temporary paddock or stalling arrangements
  • the need to transport your animals to another facility

They can even stay with a herd. The EZEE WEAN halter and strap will discourage other mothers from forming a motherly bond with another's baby. Our weaning process is less stressful and more natural for both animals.

How does the EZEE WEAN Halter Strap function?

The EZEE WEAN halter strap functions on the principal theory of comfort and discomfort. The EZEE WEAN halter strap has flexible urethane prongs (round tips) strategically located to cause discomfort for both the foal and the mother. Both animals, equally, find the nursing experiences uncomfortable, and irritating. The adult animal is irritated enough to signal the foal that nursing will no longer be tolerated.

How does the mother signal, to her foal, her unwillingness to allow nursing?

The mother will stomp her leg, lay back her ears, move away from the foal, and sometimes nip. The mother's nature is to give fair warning to her young without causing injury.

What undesirable symptoms develop when using the sudden separation method of weaning foals?

By separating your animals, you cause both animals to experience separation anxiety. The anxiety is a form of stress that can manifest into animals pacing along the fence lines or stall weaving. Sometimes the animals will start to chew on fences, trees, or stalling materials. Often excessive (heart wrenching) vocalization will occur by both animals. Loss of weight or a slowdown of growth-rate can occur. Animals could attempt to break out, resulting in self-inflicted injuries. Many times these injuries require special attention, veterinarian care, or even result in death. Using the EZEE WEAN halter and strap allows your animals to continue to share companionship and eliminates separation stress.

How long should EZEE WEAN halter and strap be worn?

Typically, the EZEE WEAN halter and strap would be worn four to six weeks, but each animal's tolerance level of comfort and discomfort is unique. Each mother has her own tolerance level. The mother, first-time or experienced, may allow the foal to suck a couple of times to immediately reduce her discomfort cause from a gorged bag. Do not be alarmed. The product is called EZEE WEAN, not cold turkey. After a period of time her bag will reduce in size and the attempts to nurse will become more annoying and uncomfortable for both. The intentional design of the EZEE WEAN halter and strap will cause discomfort to both. The persistence of the foal, and his attempt to drink, will cause direct discomfort to himself. His discomfort will immediately stop when he stops trying to nurse (cause and effect). Mom remains close for companionship. After two weeks, the animal caregiver will observe the reduction of the bag size or drying up of the bag. The length of time for the drying up of the mother's bag varies with each animal. The persistence of the foal depends on the age of the foal and his dependence level.

When should you start the weaning foals?

The caregiver of the animals must use his or her observation and wise judgment to determine the optimum time to wean. Personal observation of the well-being of animals and foals' personalities are the determining factors for when to wean. Is the mother thin or in poor health? Is the young animal healthy and has it developed socially? Is the young animal able to move amongst the other herd animals independently? It is best to wean at the foal's optimum time of four months to six months of age and when both animals are healthy. Typically, the older the foal, the more persistent the foal is to continue to nurse and the longer the process could take. The foal being older may require the EZEE WEAN halter and strap to be worn longer. Or the mother may not tolerate the foal's attempts to nurse, and she could put a halt to the nursing process quickly. Leave the EZEE WEAN halter and strap on until you're sure there is no interest exhibited by the foal and the mother's bag is completely dried up.

What are the prongs of the EZEE WEAN strap made of?

The prongs have blunt ends and are made of flexible urethane material. The prongs function as an irritant to cause the mother to become uncomfortable. Also, there are two smaller prongs located on the profile flaps that cause discomfort to the foal each time he attempts to nurse. The baby self-inflicts its own discomfort. When the attempts stop, the discomfort stops (behavioral reward). Pretty natural, wouldn't you say?
